Restoring Sierra Leone’s Mangroves: Aruna Bangura’s Community-Led Conservation Efforts

In the coastal neighborhood of Aberdeen, Freetown, Sierra Leone, the rapid loss of mangrove forests has led to increased coastal erosion, storm surges, and flooding. Recognizing the critical role mangroves play in climate moderation and supporting local livelihoods, Aruna Bangura took action.

As part of the National Geographic and The Nature Conservancy’s Externship Program, Aruna identified mangrove restoration as a solution to his community’s environmental challenges. He established Nature for Mangroves, an organization that collaborates with neighborhood groups to restore 5,000 mangroves in Freetown. The initiative involves identifying suitable sites for planting, monitoring growth, and maintaining the areas to ensure long-term success.

This community-based approach not only addresses environmental concerns but also promotes a sense of ownership and stewardship among local residents. By involving the community, the project offers livelihood opportunities through eco-tourism and sustainable fisheries.

“One of the most inspiring moments during my experience was witnessing the enthusiasm of local community members as they actively participated in mangrove restoration efforts,” Aruna shared. “Another meaningful moment was collaborating with fellow externs and experts to provide feedback on my solutions, focusing solely on addressing climate vulnerability in coastal communities.”

Aruna’s journey as a changemaker continues as he leverages his Global Challenges degree from African Leadership University to seek new leadership and grant opportunities. His goal is to amplify local conservation efforts and promote sustainable solutions for freshwater and community conservation in Sierra Leone.
